The Turkish community living in Europe has long sought stronger representation in social, cultural, and political spheres. In response to this need, the UID (Union of International Democrats) was established as a key organization that serves as a bridge, helping the Turkish diaspora both preserve its identity and integrate into the countries they reside in. So, what is UID, what does it do, and why is it so important for Turks living in Europe?
UID was founded in 2004 in Cologne, Germany, under the name “Union of European Turkish Democrats” (UETD). Its initial goal was to promote the active participation of Turks in Europe in social life and to defend their rights. In 2018, during the 6th General Assembly held in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the organization adopted a more global vision and changed its name to Union of International Democrats (UID).
This change was not just in name—UID also expanded its areas of operation. It now aims to be the voice of Turkish and Muslim diaspora communities not only in Europe but around the world.
UID’s main mission is to defend the rights of Turks living abroad, support the preservation of their identity, and promote their democratic participation. To achieve this, it operates in the following fields:
Social Integration and Participation: Supports migrants in becoming active citizens in their countries of residence.
Multiculturalism: Encourages peaceful coexistence among diverse cultures.
Combating Racism: Raises awareness on Islamophobia and xenophobia.
Youth and Women’s Empowerment: Promotes the active participation of women and youth in social life.
Cultural Heritage: Supports the preservation of Turkish culture, including language and traditions.
Today, UID operates in over 30 countries through an extensive organizational network. Each local branch implements projects tailored to the needs of its respective community. Some notable initiatives include:
Voter Awareness Campaigns: Informs Turkish voters in Europe about exercising their democratic rights.
Educational Seminars and Panels: Organizes informative events for different segments of the community.
Family and Youth Counseling: Offers support on family communication, adapting to the education system, and youth development.
Bilingual Education Projects: Provides educational materials and school collaborations to keep the Turkish language alive and pass it on to new generations.
NGO Collaborations: Develops joint projects with national and international civil society organizations.
For the Turkish community in Europe, UID is more than just an association—it is a voice of representation and a symbol of belonging. Whether they seek political influence or want to integrate into society without losing their cultural identity, UID offers meaningful support mechanisms.
UID also plays an active role in many social issues such as preventing youth from becoming disconnected from their roots, empowering women, and preserving family structure. In doing so, it aims to foster both individual and collective development.
As global mobility increases, the integration of diaspora communities into their host societies while preserving their own identities becomes more complex and multidimensional. This is where diaspora NGOs
